AMPANG: A robber held 32 people at gunpoint before he was shot dead by a security guard who was hiding inside a bank in Taman Muda, here, yesterday.
Armed with a Steyr assault rifle, the gunman ordered the 20 customers and 12 employees of the Public Bank branch outlet to lay on the floor while a bank employee filled his backpack with cash from the counter.
Just as the gunman was leaving the bank with the loot, the security guard stepped out from behind a door and fired a shot from his pump gun, hitting the robber just below his left ear, killing him instantly.
Those in the bank screamed and ran out and saw the robber's accomplice, who was waiting outside, speeding off on a motorcycle.
The drama unfolded at 3.15pm when the robber, dressed in black and wearing a full-faced helmet, walked in and shouted at everyone to lay on the floor.
He then jumped over the counter and ordered a bank employee at gunpoint, to fill a backpack he was carrying. Investigations revealed that the robber had RM253,000 in his backpack when he was gunned down. Police withheld the identity of the security guard.
Ampang police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Amiruddin Jamaluddin said the entire incident took 10 minutes.
He said the suspect had not yet been identified and they were still trying to determine how he obtained the Steyr rifle, as it is usually used by the Armed Forces, police and other enforcement agencies
